Other things that affect your internet speed
There are a number of factors relating to your in-home setup and use, which can affect how your service performs. Understanding these factors will help you get the most out of your connection.
  • If you have used up all of your allowance, your connection speed will automatically be slowed. Check your data usage by signing into your account. We understand that this can happen from time to time, which is why you can change your data allowance online once a month in the ‘Manage Service’ section of your account.
  • If you have a Fibre to the Building (FTTB) or Fibre to the Node (FTTN) service your speed will also be impacted by the quality of your telephone line and your distance from the nbn node.
  • Downloading large files, updating software or backing up photos will impact the internet speed for everybody in your house. An easy way to check if any device is impacting speed is to disconnect each device from your home network one by one and see if there is an improvement in your speed. If you notice any improvement check what programs you have running on the device you disconnected.
  • If you are still having speed issues, connect directly to the modem using an Ethernet cable or to the nbn connection box.
  • Search Support for answers to common troubleshooting questions.
You can learn more about speed by reading our nbn speeds explained and Key facts: nbn services brochures.
